Sand domes K2 and Y6b

"stuff on the side" is not a very clear identification. The Y6b's and a few of the unstreamlined K2's (and several other classes) had covers over the sanders. Is that what you are looking at? They were retrofitted to the A's and several Y classes during the mid 1940's, and the Y6b's and the last 8 A's were built with them. I assume it was a weather protection.

What is the stuff on the side of the sand domes on K2 (unstreamlined) and Y6b locomotives? Is there a drawing somewhere with dimensions? What is the purpose of it?
Thank you,
