He will be missed greatly.  We had discussions on C&O versus N&W coal cars many a time . . . via e-mail.  Who lead who at a specific time.

You could never do away with those . That?s really the only thing keeping us who work outside or around equipment

safe. Every grocery store bag boy , utility worker , railroader , construction worker must wear one. It?s sort of like wearing

a condom during sex it protects you from everything. They do have their place put are really over emphasized. You can?t

go down a street anywhere and not see one. Some Railfans love them they like to wear them when chasing makes them

feel more like their part of what?s happening . Now that I pointed his out you will start laughing when you start noticing

how many are out their

With all the comments about the authenticity of the refurbished 611 one very obvious 21st Century visual in the current test run videos is the dayglow vests worn by the crew and support staff. No suggestion as to their elimination intended.

I never met him but have inscribed copies of his N&W coal car book and his Dictionary of Railroad Quotations.  He was a very agreeable guy in the eMail correspondence I had with him,  He?s obviously going to be missed by a lot of people in a lot of places.  He was in the process of doing a second edition of the Dictionary, and had some material for a second edition of the coal car book.

Thanks for passing it along.

Greetings,
Andrew Dow, a faithful and enthusiastic R&LHS member, and a frequent contributor to this list, died on 24 April, at age 71 from cancer. He was a member since at least 1999. And his father was listed as a member in my 1985 roster, so I'm certain Andrew was reading our journals even back then in Yorkshire, England.
You can read his long obituary here:
http://www.stephensonloco.org.uk/SLSobituaries.htm
Two personal stories about Andrew. He was very fussy about his library. He long ago insisted that the R&LHS back issues he purchased, and he wanted them all, had to be perfect with no writing on them. I told him quite frankly that he would have many holes in his R&LHS collection if he insisted on that. So he backed down and trusted my judgement. And did quite well ending his life with all but seven editions: Andrew Dow wants: Nos.17, 18, 19, 20, 39A, 47A & 54 as of 8/22/14.
The other thing was his method of payment. I gave him the usual options, and he wanted to send U.S. currency at his own risk. Which was fine until it arrived here, repeatedly, with a barely legible address, and in the usual British manner, with no return address. I'd open a tiny envelope that contained $300. But his faith was rewarded as we never had a problem.
Wish I had met him...... :)

Wabash Bluebird dome observation ?#1601 was repainted, sadly, in N&W paint as #1601. She entered Amtrak service as #9310 and was retired in 1981. She quietly resides today in Duluth, ?Georgia.Randy Rippy?WRHS

Dunno fer sure, but them furrin railroads prolly called them sixteenhunneds or nine hunnerds.? N&W guys called the 4-8-2s one hunnerds and the 4-6-2s five hunnerds.

And just to carry this on another step, nobody but a fan ever called the passenger Geeps ?Redbirds?.

Thank you Ed and Bud for getting everyone straight on what the employees called the locomotives way back when, be they twelve-hunnerds, 2100-hunnerts or whatever. Thank you.

That said, what did the VGN and the C&O call what we today call "Allegheny?" We know the C&O had 60 of them and the VGN less than 10, and they were virtually the same but what did the crews call them? Anyone know?

We call them by their Class names, H-8's or Allegheny's or Class AG (hope I'm right on that), but this could be interesting.

The UP called the Big Boys four-thousands and their 4-12-2's were nine-thousands, both for their road numbers and I am sure we can come up with a list a mile long for the other guys so let's keep it close to home.

While we're here on the topic, what did N&W call the Pacifics? 500's? What about the various 4-8-2's?

I've heard the Virginian Brethren refer to the AG Class as "Blue Ridge class" but must mostly just "those big 900's"
