Shipping policy and related costs

For what it is really worth:

While I can agree that the shipping "loss" as itemized by Alex Schust
should try to be minimized within reason, completely forgotten and never
mentioned is the very simple fact that the Society thru Bob Bowers has been
operated quite efficiently for many years. In addition, the society is not
"losing money" per se, just not recouping the full shipping costs.

Most books and similar productions not originating within the society
typically cost about 35-40% less than the MSRP (manufacturer's suggested
retail price), so--o-o-o-o-o, while there is that additional 1.79% actual
cost, it is NOT in fact a loss or financial drain upon the society, but
however, an unplanned extra cost of goods sold. Yes, real shipping costs
should be the norm, but it is seldom ever going to completely balance out.
Trust me.

As Alex has told us, when he sends out his books directly, he can easily
figure out the actual cost. That is E Z to do when you have a simple to
quantify item such as Alex's case. My book, too, I also work the same way
especially since it easy to do. With Bob and the society and having
multiple sizes, multiple vendors supplying him and not all with timely
delivery, the society does about the best it can do under the circumstances.

So let's remember that while every dollar counts, the society is still more
than breaking even when the bigger picture is taken into account. The fine
work Brother Bowers has done over the years is an invisible asset of the
society and we shall truly be the lesser for it when he retires from the
position in just over six months. Whomever steps into his position has
really big shoes to fill and only after he is gone will we truly learn to
appreciate the fine work he has done for us for ...... what is it, 20 years.

Think about all the above; the entire package.
