Don't forget our First Day Hike!

On January 1, 2016 High Bridge Trail will showcase its new access road as
well as natural and historic resources on the east end, or
Prince Edward County side of High Bridge. Participants are to meet at the
end of the new access road (Camp Paradise Road) at the loop near
the new picnic pods at 2:00 p.m. After a brief introduction, Bob Flippen,
the Park Historian will guide hikers to see some interesting
features including a rediscovered African-American cemetery that may be be
the resting place of Robert R. Moton's mother, Emily.

Also see one of the four forts constructed to guard the approaches to High
Bridge in the American Civil War and learn why it was called
Camp Paradise by Louisiana's Donaldsonville Artillery.

A new trail named Camp Paradise Trail, descends toward the Appomattox
River beginning near the fort winding along the hillside toward and
along the river bank before reaching the massive brick pillars that
supported the original bridge. Marvel at the splendor beneath High
Bridge while exploring the new green area that will be enjoyed by Park
visitors.

Total length of the hike is approximately 1 mile and slightly strenuous in
some places, but overall easy to trod. This is a family event
but be advised strollers are not well suited to the terrain. The Friends
Group for the Park will be present with refreshments. The first
50 visitors receive a special 80th anniversary commemorative pin.

To reach Camp Paradise Road-take Rt 601 Aspen Hill Road from US 460 just
east of Farmville. Go 2 miles, cross over the Trail and turn left
in another 200-300 yards onto Camp Paradise Road. Proceed 1.5 miles to end
loop.
