In the early 1970s, N&W's Winston District changed from single track, automatic
block, to traffic control.  Following the conversion, there were only two signaled passing
sidings on the district -- Wirtz and Stoneville (Philpot came later).  N&W used Union Switch
and Signal (so did the PRR), but because of a shortage of US&S parts, signals on the
east end of the Norfolk Division were re-spaced, with the left-overs going to the
Winston line.   Can't explain the shortage of US&S parts, but that may have lead
to the shift in signal types.                                Harry Bundy   
 





Does anyone have any information on when the change to oldschool PLs might have begun and for that matter, when was the first appearance of Vaders?  See photo attached.
