There was both a water and coaling station at Northfork, although the coaling station was closed by the early 1900s.

Water was supplied by the Bluestone pumping station which got its water from the Bluestone Dam. Northfork was part of the N&W’s Elkhorn Water District which supplied water to tanks at Coaldale, Switchback, Morgan, Powhatan, Northfork and Vivian. Morgan originally had its own well and Vivian got water from dams on Bottom Creek. Northfork also probably had its own well originally. I expect Eckman Yard got water from the Elkhorn Water District once it was built.

There is a slide currently on Ebay showing what I believe to the the West end of Byrd yard in Northfork in Oct. 58.

Centered in the shot is a black water tank. I would assume that this tank was for the town water supply and not associated with the railroad.

Can anyone verify this/add any additional information?

Thanks,

Jim Cochran
