Obit for Bob Carpenter. Bob was a WW2 veteran and one of America's Greatest Generation. He will be missed.

Robert Bowen Carpenter Jr. claimed the promise of resurrection on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the son of the late Robert B. Carpenter Sr. and Louise Cureton Carpenter. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Cathcart Carpenter; his son, David Randolph Carpenter; and his sister, Hester Louise Carpenter. He is survived by his daughters, Lee C. Harizanoff (Chris Dahm), Catherine C. Bear (Joseph) and June C. Carpenter; as well as six grandchildren, Laura McGrory (Mike), Joseph, Michael (Kailyn), Brian and Robert Bear, Joshua Carpenter; and four great-grandchildren. A graduate of Clemson University, Bob worked for English Construction Company retiring as a Vice President after over fifty years. He served the town of Altavista as Planning Commission Chairman for over fifty years and was awarded the Altavista Outstanding Citizen. He was active in the United Methodist Church serving as Lynchburg District and Virginia Conference Lay Leader. He attended multiple General Conferences. Bob was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Thaxton, Va. and the recipient of the first Harry Denman Award for Evangelism in the United Methodist Church. Bob was a Mason, an Eagle Scout, and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. In 1937, he traveled to the Netherlands for the Boy Scout World Jamboree. Bob served his country in World War II and helped liberate the first concentration camp. He was a member of the VFW. He was a life long lover of anything related to trains and was a member of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors on the MICU, Pulmonary Unit and Palliative Care at Lynchburg General Hospital for their loving and competent care. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, December 3, 2018, at Lane Memorial United Methodist Church, 1201 Bedford Avenue, Altavista, Va. with the Rev. Marci Huntsman and the Rev. Ben Horrocks officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Internment will be in Green Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Lane Memorial United Methodist Church, 1201, Bedford Avenue, Altavista, VA 24517. Arrangements by Burch-Messier Funeral Home, Bedford, 540-586-7360.
