The railway museum is the National Railway Museum in York is really worth the trip, plus the walled city of York with its cathedral is a treasure all by itself. The only other one I can suggest is the London Transport Museum, which has an Underground collection.

If you are a steam buff and staying in London, I'd recommend visiting the Tower Bridge engine room at the south side of the river. (See towerbridge.org.uk.) Or HMS Belfast.

Closer by train from London is the Great Western Society base at Didcot. Just a walk from the railway station at Didcot Parkway over a footbridge to a vast collection of Great Western and Western Region of British Railways equipment. Using the Central line of the underground one can reach the Epping and Ongar heritage railway. Going South of London you have the Bluebell Railway also accessible by rail. Have never spent much time in the north as the family I have there lives in the southwest (Newton Abbot) and Southeast (Woking) but hope that helps.

It was still meeting in the 1940s. Does it exist today? I want to visit their archives if they have any. My great-grandfather presented at least four papers before that august group between 1915 and 1925 (while living in London) and won an award for one of those papers. I believe he many have even served on some kind of executive committee.
