Last steam operation date for EACH major class

My appreciation for the kind research by both Col Jeffries and Ron for
digging up repair general information.

But what I would really desire to known is: when was the actual LAST date
of operation of each major class of steam as they departed from our midst
in the 1950s. We read all sorts of facts and figures and understandably,
not all info and details have survived as it was not considered important
back then, but today, a lot of those nitty-gritty details are highly
desired.

Examples of what we do know: we know, of course, pretty much about the last
J and the last operational Y6B #2191 as well as the switcher in early May
1960 and the exact dates of these events, but when and where did the last
K1 and K2 operate and the date please? Same question for the A class (okay
- stationary boiler work doesn't count here), E, M, M1, M2, H, and
especially the Z class as very little seems to have been said about them,
likely because they were retired and scrapped earlier than the others and
were not as beloved.

So what were the last OPERATIONAL dates (as best can be determined) for
each while under N&W use? I'm not quite as 'hot to trot' about the
different classes of Y's but if that information is out there, I wouldn't
turn away from it and think it could make for a neat tale, especially when
woven into the fabric of other relevant information.

Those last such events can make for pretty interesting stories sometimes,
like the tale friend Ed King gave us about the Z class that was dispatched
to Bristol as a stationary boiler in an emergency. That was printed in
Trains 25 years ago and is wonderful and romantic to read today, but was it
the last (as an example) of a Z to operate on N&W.

And when was the LAST shopping in Roanoke done; period and do we know which
engine?

Note: Both Roanoke Shops and Portsmouth Shop did classified repairs until
8-1957. After that date it appears that only Roanoke Shops did these
repairs.

S-1 ???? 3-1958 ??? ?? Began retiring 6-58; all retired by 9-1960.

Y-5/Y-6? 3-1958 ??? ?? Began retiring 6-58; all retired by 9-1960.

This may have been covered before but now with so much time available I'll
inquire, just in case it has not been published or shared.

When were the LAST of each of the various major classes of locomotives
SHOPPED at Roanoke? I am referring to A's, E's, K's, M's, Z's and even J's
even though I suspect that last class of 14 has been published since it has
been in the public eye so often. I'm not including the G's and W's since
those were so few and often departed for the boneyard, as well as the S
class switchers, which largely came on board late in the game.

Is there any record of when the shops ceased doing the class repairs?

Idle minds make for the devil's workshop here.
