I don’t think Abingdon branch was included in the N&W ICC Valuation as it was being operated as the independent subsidiary Virginia & Carolina in 1916 when the initial data collection for the ICC Valuation started. The same applies to the New River, Holston & Western. I did find the NRH&W ICC Valuation at the Archives, but it is not highly detailed as in the N&W provided data and some of the data is incorrect.

The N&W’s 23rd Annual Report, dated December 31, 1918, noted, “After protracted discussion, representatives of the transportation systems of the country and of the United States Railroad Administration came to an understanding in October, 1918, as to the standard clauses of an agreement between the parties pursuant to the Federal Control Act.

“Based upon the standard clauses, an agreement dated December 27th, 1918, with the Director General of Railroads, embracing suitable special provisions, was executed by your Company and by the four subsidiary operating companies whose roads are included in the Norfolk and Western System, viz: the Virginia-Carolina Railway Company, the New River, Holston and Western Railroad Company, the Williamson and Pond Creek Railroad Company and the Tug River and Kentucky Railroad Company. The interests of the five corporations under the Federal Control Act were thus unified and the relations of the system to the Federal Government simplified...”

In effect the N&W agreed to merge the four subsidiary companies into the N&W, which happened in 1919. The N&W’s Dec 31, 1919 Annual Report noted:

VIRGINIA-CAROLINA RAILWAY COMPANY.

Pursuant to authority given at the annual meeting of the stockholders held April 10th, 1919,

the railroad, property and franchises of the Virginia-Carolina Railway Company were by indenture

dated April 10th, 1919, leased to your Company for a term of 99 years. Later, by deed dated

August 27th, 1919, the railroad, property and franchises were conveyed to your Company.| Since

June 1st, 1919, the railroad has been operated as the Abingdon Branch. The total cost of this

property to' your Company was $1,994,571.99.

NEW RIVER, HOLSTON & WESTERN RAILROAD COMPANY.

Pursuant to authority given at the annual meeting of the stockholders held April 10th, 1919,

the railroad, property and franchises of the New River, Holston & Western Railroad Company

were by deed dated May 13th, 1919, conveyed to your Company, and since June 1st, 1919, the

railroad has been operated as the Narrows Branch. The total cost of the property to your

Company was $489,035.35.

There are multiple construction books and journals for the Virginia & Carolina in the back room at the archives, but those don’t generally include drawings.

I don’t have anything on Abingdon Branch, but I am pretty sure the ICC Valuation books for the Dry Fork Branch have photo copies of the trestle plan. Look under Branch Line structures. Bridge No. 2288 over Track Fork is a 1,244.17 steel viaduct. It is 123 feet high at its highest point. Two pictures of the viaduct on pg 126 in NWHS publication, “Dry Fork – Norfolk & Western Branch Line.”

The archives has ICC Book # 12VA - Structures Radford to Bristol and All Branches - Apparently structures on

the Abingdon Branch were removed before the book was donated to N&WHS. Bridges on the North Carolina

Extension and Speedwell Branches (and others) are included in the volume. EXAMPLE: There is a plan

dated Apr. 14, 1886 of a 5-thru truss span on the Cripple Creek Extension. Harry Bundy
