Ken, On which divisions did your grandfathers work?

Sounds like somebody really trusted you if you were only 10 at the time. Or maybe they weren't privy to your where-abouts? : )

Thanks for the Roanoke memories, John Garner

No sidewalk . I parked my bike on the tenth street side of the bridge and walked out there on that narrow sidewalk what there was of it , I was more interested in getting over those huge train yards of the Norfolk o And Western than I was thinking about how safe or unsafe in that case, it works you know, 10-year-olds don’t think quite fully the dangers of things! All I was interested in, was the Railroad and watching all of that action of the steam engines the shifters ,And of course ,the caboose is more of great interest since my grandfather was a conductor on the other railroad the Virginian and rode in the caboose but my other grandfather Thomas Tanner was an engineer for the Norfolk and western! Thanks, Ken Tanner

Take care,
Ken Tanner

>> In the steam era caboose roofs were painted brown or with Dednox or Mortex (alphalt compounds). But only the roof tops. Facia was red like the body. In time, of course, the brown tended to weather to a more blackish or dark gray appearance. But in the later red schemes, the roof was red like the body.
