Jack,

In railroad lingo that’s what is commonly referred to as ‘Wheel Arrangement’ and ‘Road Numbers’. There’s never a dumb question. It’s always fun to learn new things. I don’t know how many N&W books you may have but a great starter for me back in 1972 was ‘Norfolk & Western Steam (The Last 25 Years)’ by Ron Rosenberg, and Quadrant Press. And of course for more detail, the classic, ‘N&W: Giant of Steam’ by Lewis ‘Bud’ Jefferies, from the NWHS commissary.

Thanks, Ken

That is exactly the information I am looking for. I just didn't know how to ask the question correctly.

Jack

I’m guessing that you are looking for the type of locomotives. That would be the steam 2-6-6-4 locomotives, Class A, Nos. 1200-1242.

Thank you for your replies about engine class, but unfortunately, I asked the wrong question. What I really want to know is what type of engines were used to haul those long coal trains in the 40s and 50s. Please excuse my mistake. Thanks,
