Jawn Henry water treatment tender

I suspect King's conclusion may be correct based on what I can see of
the tender in the photo.

This discussion raises a question in my mind why the zeolite water
treatment apparatus was installed in the 2300's treatment tender.  Other
steam locomotives on the N&W performed well enough with the conventional
treated water from the wayside tanks.  Did the 2300's water tube boiler
or steam turbine dictate a higher level of treatment?

It may not be well known, but in later years after the 2300 was based at
Shaffers Crossing for pusher service on Blue Ridge grade, the zeolite
water treatment apparatus was removed from its tender and installed in
the water treatment building at Shaffers Crossing, where in later years,
as best as I can remember, it supplied water for the steam generators on
the GP-9 passenger diesel locomotives. When I was working at the
Shaffers Crossing roundhouse in the diesel era, I somewhat  remember one
day that I accompanied a Motive Power water treatment specialist to the
zeolite installation there to charge/flush (I don't remember what) the
zeolite water treatment softener.
