How did the railroad work Jenkin Jones

Tom,

There was no switchback to get to Jenkinjones, but there were switchbacks to get to the mines at Jenkinjones.

Presumably you are asking about Operation No. 7 at Jenkinjones that was located on the hillside opposite the company store. Operation No. 6 was on the same hillside as the company store. Operation No. 8 was on the Ballard-Harmon Spur. All three mines required switchbacks. The switchback for the No. 6 and No. 7 mine used the same tail track, which was 645 feet long.

NWHS book “Tug Fork - N&W Branch Line” has about 11 pages on Jenkinjones that includes pictures and track diagrams of the three mines.

Am I correct that there was a switchback to get to Jenkin Jones? Is there a detailed description of how the N&W operated there? How many cars would fit on the switchback lead? Lastly where was the tipple in relation to the company store? I’ve see pictures with a track on the left (up hill) side of the building.

Thanks in advance.
