Rick,

I always appreciate your knowledge of N&W passenger schedules, equipment
consist, USPS services, and dates of notable changes. Do you plan to
attend the convention in Roanoke in June? It would be nice to meet you.

Train No. 1 was the southbound train, due in Roanoke at 9:10 am.

Consist:

1 PRR B60 baggage Harrisburg-Roanoke

1 N&W BMf baggage-mail (RPO) Hagerstown-Roanoke

1 N&W Pg coach Harrisburg-Roanoke

1 N&W S1 10-6 sleeper New York-Roanoke

1 N&W De Lounge-Diner Shenandoah-Roanoke

This was almost always a fixed consist with little variation. It was
rare but it would be a second sleeper,

and not necessarily an N&W car. I recall an SP heavyweight on No. 2 once
in 1957, and an ACL

lightweight on a very late No. 2 in a later year.

Power would have been a K2a 127-131 until steam ended on the Shenandoah
Division February 1957.

Afterwards it would be a GP9.

The biggest changes occurred in 1958. A streamlined P1 coach, former
Powhatan Arrow car, rebuilt with seating

for 68 passengers was assigned to Nos. 1 and 2. The diner was cut back
to Waynesboro-Roanoke. The PRR baggage car

was dropped and the N&W baggage-mail ran through to Harrisburg. It was
designated "closed pouch" by the postal service.

In other words, it was not manned. Also in 1957 PRR stopped handling
railway express on their portion of the route between Harrisburg-

Hagerstown. REA was then trucked to PRR stations on their line.
