Picture: top of passenger equipment & ends

Hi Society,

1) I've been looking in the archive for some good color photo references of
passenger equipment in the steam era, especially the roof.

I'm weathering some PG (stand ins) after I number them.

Does anyone know some good ones?

2) I see the ends are sometimes painted black, and sometimes so dirty they
are black. Does anyone know the story on when the painting started and how
often?
