1) I've been looking in the archive for some good color photo references of passenger equipment in the steam era, especially the roof.
I'm weathering some PG (stand ins) after I number them. 
Does anyone know some good ones? 
2) I see the ends are sometimes painted black, and sometimes so dirty they are black. Does anyone know the story on when the painting started and how often?
