There was a period in the 1950's when Class J tenders were fitted with  coal
boards.  In an attempt to avoid paying Cincinnati Union Terminal  exorbitant
prices for coal, N&W experimented with coaling at Prichard on the  westbound
trip,  avoiding the top off at CUT, then returning to Prichard to  replenish 
the
coal bunker.  Although coal boards helped, there were too many close  calls.
