Years ago I rebuilt a Y6b into a Y5 (2092) and sold or traded it to George
Hughes. I had since acquired 3 more Y6bs and those were also slated to
become Y5s. I also got 3 of the Bachman Aux tenders and with inspiration
from the E3 project, I added back the coal bunkers and walkways, using some
photos from the College collection. I had planned them to be the time
freight haulers, with my 8 Y3s doing coal drag work. I had also cobbled
together 2 G1s for local light freight, and the M2cs were for work trains.
The Z1s (never built) would do coal work too, but I only got one as a
reference for the rest of the fleet if I ever get around to it. I had a
tool failure on an Auto-Quarter which did precision quartering and driver
removal so I could swap gear boxes, and make Bowsers run smooth as silk. I
need to find an excellent machinist to make some replacement pieces in case
I break another. I learned to make 2 Bowser H9 frames into the SRR 2-8-8-2
simple articulated with a PVC tube boiler, and cab I had to fabricate
myself. It ran great, but the drive shaft arrangement had to be re-done for
less slop. I was going to remove the 4th driver and frame stuff and make a
2-6-6-2 Z1 as my next project. Then along come this wonderful
lady.............

I am the same way. I have a 2174 (I confess its been regeared with Northwest
Shortline products...), and 3 2197's, two of which were renumbered to 2173
and 2192. They all run pretty well.... My Bachmann J is waiting repair....
the gears in the engine broke all the pieces... I almost ordered a Bowser
undercarriage for it....

Why are you so quick to demean the Rivarossi Y6b? I think my Rivarossi 2174
is a beautiful engine and runs well, compared with my Bachmann Plus J's
which tended to be tempermental (at least until I find someone willing
enough to work on them). I will gladly take another Rivarossi engine or
maybe more, in case anyone would like to part with what they have. Other
than that, I feel I cannot comment.

Gee another Y6b? .....................uh, the only Y6b that I have seen
that is affordable is the crappy Rivarossi Y6b. Depsite a few upgrades, this
engine is still lacking. I am very happy to see this engine made. My guess
is that the reason this engine is being made is not only its appeal to N&W
modelers, but also its appeal to modelers who don't specifically model the
N&W. This is very important to make sure they sell enough to make models.
Furthermore, polls on both magazines and internet that I have seen have
consistently put this engine near the top. Also, consider that the Y6b is
so popular that it is able to support an O gauge 3 rail scale version by
both MTH and Lionel. (3rd Rail is considering a similarly priced brass
version) However, if this engine does sell well, you can probably expect to
see more N&W steam. So rather than bash this engine, we should hope it
sells well so that more N&W steam will be made.
I model both the Pennsy and N&W (actually the Milwaukee Road too, but that
is another story) Notice how much Pennsy stuff is being made. The reason is
simple, Pennsy fans buy Pennsy stuff which means more Pennsy stuff is made.
Rather than look at this as a glass half empty, lets look at as a glass
half full. Encourage PCM to make an accurate model and hope it sells well.
Then maybe in the future we will see more N&W steam.
Also, as a side note, Sunset models made a pretty affordable HO scale brass
M and M1.
