The brown trim was Dark Brown Trim. The best description is what
typically gets called 'walnut brown' at the hardware store. Look at the
spray can paints particularly.
The short story is that the earlier N&W wooden depots had a red-brown
trim on 'beige' wood which was much more like antique white with a
distinct yellow cast to it. (See the Matewan depot replica in this early
scheme.) In the 1930-1940 time period the wood exterior trim became the
dark brown color. In the mid 1940's the N&W experimented with a variety
of color schemes, from which came the white with green (park bench
green/ deep emerald green) scheme of the 1950's to extermination of the
stations.
Some "beige" and brown stations lasted in their old style paint until
their destruction. Blue Ridge is a notable example. I think that one
stood until the mid-60's basically unchanged.
The Blue Ridge depot shows up in many N&W color books as there were
numerous photographers visiting Blue Ridge at the end of steam. When
you look at the faded colors just remember that these days were the days
of lead-based pigments for paints. EVERYTHING turned yellow-ish in the
sun with lead pigments.
The ARROW magazine of November/December1998 had a very nice article on
station colors written by Jim Brewer.
The N&W standards book has a drawing detailing the interior color scheme
for stations and an exterior color scheme for BRICK stations with the
trim color identified for those styles of stations.

Subject: Color ?
Ya'll seem to be a wealth of knowledge on the subject of Norfolk &
Western history so I am hoping you can help me with some information.
I build custom scale RR structures and I am gathering information for a
future project, a Norfolk & Western passenger station.
My question: What span of years did N & W employ the Brown and Cream
colors on their stations? What shade of brown was used for the trim,
light, dark, medium??
Any additional information on this subject will be greatly appreciated.
