This was discussed a few years ago, but I think we came to the conclusion that the last magnetic flagman on the N&W system lasted until 1985 and was located just west of Marion on the Pulaski District at what is known as Copenhaver's Crossing. I remember it being there in 1984.
The reason I remember that date is because our Church bought Pew's from a youth camp located across the tracks there, and when we were going to pick some of them up a train came and I watched the Wig Wag do its dance for us! That's the last time I remember it. I went back in the Church records to see when the Pew's were purchased, and it was July 1984.
When we last discussed it on this list, I'm thinking four or five years ago, I tried to track down who got it. I was not able to find its whereabouts though. I'm still looking for a real one for my personal collection.

Chuck:
Wig-wags were manufactured by the Magnetic Flagman Co. in the 20's.
A pair protected the U.S. 17 crossing west of Bridge 7. By the 60's,
they were no longer state of the art grade crossing protection and, in fact,
they became a signal maintainer's nightmare -- lots of moving parts to
fail. There was one at North Street in Waverly, VA that last until 1976
(or later). On the Fort Wayne Division there was one at Roanoke, IN
that was cantilever-mounted - installed by the Wabash, I'd guess.
