FWIW:  The original (i.e., ancient) fluorescent tubes were made with 
beryllium,  which is highly toxic and can cause a sometimes fatal 
chemical pneumonia. That has long since been banned and replaced with 
safe alternatives but the "urban legends" about broken tubes persist.
