The sale was held on 28Sept1962 with conformation of the bid by the N&W being accepted by court order on 4Oct1962. ICC approval was given on 29Oct1962. The Railway officially began operations under N&W ownership on 1Nov1962 as the Norfolk, Franklin, and Danville Railway. (Griffin, TLC, 2006 - The Atlantic and Danville Railway Company; the Railroad of Southside Virginia).

I'm not exactly positive about the dates, but
the line Danville - Portsmouth was leased
by Southern Railway 1899-1949. The
largest locomotive Southern could operate
between those points was a 2-8-0. The
A&D appeared in 1949. FYI, the Southern,
later the A&D reached Pinners Point
(Portsmouth) over six miles of trackage
right on ACL.
Can't cite the date NF&D replaced A&D,
but I do know it was auctioned off on
the steps of the courthouse on Granby
Street in Norfolk. An N&W lawyer had
two checks in hand when the bidding
started. He was able to purchased
the A&D for the lesser of the two.
