P2K GP30 speed?

Regards gearing - Walthers' in their recent ads have been making a big deal about the 14:1 gearing in Proto locomotive models. The early Proto's for the most part (but not all) use 12:1 gearing like Athearn used (I do not know what Athearn is using now).
GSB used 14:1 in their SD40-2 which made people unhappy back then. The old Roco made Atlas had to 10:1.

For what it's worth I've also noticed the new P2K GP30s run very slow. I have several and they're all significantly slower than other (Atlas, Stewart, Athearn, Kato, and even older P2K) brands. They're not bad, just a lot slower than the others (perhaps a more 'prototypical' gearing?). I'm not a DCC expert but if you use DCC, I think you can set top speed CVs to match the slower locos. At least that's how I plan to approach it whenever I finally get around to building a layout.

Hi Listers,
I was able to run some new engines on a friend’s layout this afternoon. For the first time I ran my new Athearn N&W SD45’s. They ran great! I tried a new N&W P2K GP30 and the 45’s just dragged it along. It appears to run about half speed of the Athearn's. I didn’t have any of my older Athearn's or PPW or Atlas to compare it to. So my question is that the P2K’s will only run with other P2K’s?
Thanks in advance,
John Hecker
