After late 1958, the N&W went from position light signals- all yellow- to
color position light signals using red, yellow and green. The aspects for
each individual signal head are different depending on what aspects are
necessary to be displayed at a specific location. An N&W operating rule
book will show what aspects are used by the railroad for a give range of
years. Rules and aspects change over time.
In very simple terms, a seven position color-position- light would have two
green lights top and bottom, three red lights in a horizontal row though the
center, and yellow lights on the diagonal positions on the perimeter.
For instance the aspect of three vertical yellow lights or two vertical
green lights means 'proceed'; three horizontal yellow lights or three
horizontal red lights means stop or stop-and-stay. Other aspects display,
approach, approach slow, approach medium, diverging approach and many other
aspects. The intent is to provide the engineer with speed control
information and then some information on diverging routes. Thus, signals
are constructed to show different aspects as a train approaches a switch,
cross over, siding, interlocking or whatever. They are not just
-stop-or-go. So, not all signal heads use all 7 locations.
There are a couple of websites that cover railroad signaling especially the
Pennsylvania railroad type which are similar but not the same as N&W types.
You would do well to study these sites and also visit any railroad layouts
that use extensive operating signal systems. They will have some good
advice for you.

Subject: Signal Head
Gentlemen,
I have purchased the N&W signal head and I would like to know what color the
lamps are 7 (seven) holes for lamps.
I have been told the lamps were amber and also have been told they where
red.
My son and I are modelling N&W from the mid 40's to the mid 70's with a
twist on history or basically freelancing the road.
Rhank you for your hekp.
Yours aye,
Mac
