Right on, Harold! The MTH cars look very good, and considering the detail, the price is not bad. On the web site, they seem to be confused between pictures of the P1 and numbers for the P3. Fortunately, the models are all correct. Was aware of the roof line problem on the Roanoke Rails S1’s, but putting the paint part line and the gold stripe in the proper location helps a lot. The NKP car sides were done several years ago at my suggestion, and may not be still available. They also had a core kit with Budd roof to fit the sides, but I don’t know if they also made the scale fault as I have not examined an actual kit. The Walthers 10 and 6 also makes the same mistake. On my kitbash, I correct this with paint. People don’t seem to understand that Budd’s postwar production dropped the transition from roof to letterboard, so that it was a little lower than on PS and ACF cars. Jim Nichols

Jim: You are correct. I have a bad habit of getting the two sleeper classes confused. I believe that it comes from the fact that the S2 sleepers were delivered before the S1 sleepers. I also agree with you that there are laser kits for the PMs and brass sides for the S2 sleepers. I was not aware of brass sides for the S1's. I have two of the S1 brass cars imported by Sam Putney. These cars have a scale fault with the roof line not coming down far enough on the side which yields a letter-board much wider than it should be. Key imported some, what I call shell cars, PM coaches that were labeled Powhatan Arrow lounge cars. These shells make a great place to start building a good model of a PM but very few were available. SOHO also imported some PMs and P3s as converted to commuter service. The sides of these cars are under scale and the car thus sits too low. To make a good model you also have to reconstruct the vestibule. While brass imports are now very detailed they are also very expensive and of limited availability. The plastic model market has now caught up to brass in detail and scale fidelity. Price has also increased but not on the same magnitude of brass. Our plan has been to push models that are widely available and at reasonable prices. Whether they are kits or RTR has not been a stumbling point. Nor has been offering the cars through the Society or just on general market. We want to see good N&W models available to our N&W modelers via whatever route possible. Harold

All we N&W fans need now to complete our streamlined passenger cars are good models of PM coaches, as both coaches and lounges, and the S1 Budd built sleepers.
While this fall is yielding some great N&W specific passenger cars, we need to keep pushing for the S2 sleepers from Walthers as well as look for a builder, or importer, for the Pm's and S2's.
Didn’t you mean “a builder, or importer, for the Pm’s and S1’s” ? Actually, the S1’s and brass sides for the S1’s have been available in the past. (the sides were from NKP Car) And AMB Laser Kits did sides for the PM. I realize these last two were not finished RTR cars, but they were kits of N&W prototypes. Jim Nichols
