Passenger Trains

When did the N&W go from brown roofed passenger cars to black? I want to model the Powhatan Arrow in the early to mid fifties. I am looking at the MTH set that is to come out in March. What are your thoughts on these cars? I looked at ordering IHC smooth sides but they are out of stock with no restock date in sight.
