N&W F Horns

Stephen; I went to my trusty 1968 N&W Locomotive equipment guide from the
NWHS and wouldn't you know; the only drawing/spec sheet in the guide that
does not show the horn type is the sheet for the ex WAB F7As. I also
checked the very thorough N&W All Time Roster and if does not include horn
types in all the specs it provides. I am looking at my Wabash in color
book. twenty two of the WAB F7s were built by GMD in Canada for service
between Buffalo and Detroit via the line through the Province of Ontario. I
have always been under the impression that Canada mandated a particular
model of three chime horn for all diesel locomotives. The photo of 1166 on
p. 6 shows the good old A200 "blat" horn. On p. 12 is a shot of 1189 (in
Canada) and it appears to have a three chime. 1161 on p. 14, again in
Canada definitely shows a three chime. On p. 17 there is a shot taken in
1962 of the renumbered 660 which shows a three chime on the engineer's side
with a rear facing "blatter" on the fireman's side. To make a long story a
little shorter, going through the book it appears the Canadian built units,
though possibly delivered with the single chime A200s were just about all,
if not all, fitted with the Nathan three chime, and most also sport the rear
facing single chime on the fireman's side. On the other hand every picture
I could find in the Wabash book as well as the N&W First Generation Diesels
book by Withers and Bowers shows that the American built units had the front
and rear facing single chime "blatter". Sorry I can't get more definitive.
