Richard,
How did the color look inside your house or down in the basement? What type of lighting did you view it under? Did it appear too dark on your model, or were you satisfied with it ?

I had to laugh years ago when I went to my local Dupont dealer in Roanoke, Virginia to order the Pevler blue from the number on the N&W blueprints. As the guy typed the number into his computer he said something like, "Oh cool... Norfolk and Western blue..." I knew I had the actual color then. This is the number in the archives I believe. I don't have it in front of me but I can get it if anyone needs it.
Thanks,

Thank you everyone for your replies on my N&W Blue question. I'm going to look at the ATSF blue as suggested by Ed. I have a Oriental C-630 and if the color matches I'll be a happy camper. I'm also going to check with my local DuPont dealer on the Pelver blue and I'll report back. You know that this thing of sticking to the details can drive us crazy but it's what drives this hobby and our love for the N&W. If you think that this color is a hang up some of the units that came and went from Bellevue,Ohio would be even harder to weather properly matching pictures of specific units. Thank you everyone, George.

As I understand it, the blue paint of that era, and probably earlier, oxidized easily. I'm certain this is one reason why you see so many different "colors" of blue N&W locomotives.

Of course, even Floquil has changed the chemistry of its paints over the years. In the Oct-Dec 2010 issue of the Arrow, Rick Stone used the Polly Scale version of this color to paint his 10-6 sleeper.

Weathering, fading, dirt, what was painted over, new units that came in blue.......Regardless it did get lighter over time. I've always used Scalecoat and Scalecoat II, ATSF Blue. I like it. It matches the blue on my Oriental C-628's and C-630's and is close to the blue on Athearn or Atlas N&W locomotives or cab models. If you look at pictures N&W e2uipment painted in "Pevler/Wabash" blue there are lots of variations.
