Sorry to hear about the theft of that Overland J, I know that had to hurt.
I've never owned the MTH model, but did see one get test run at my LHS. I do
own two BLI Js and love them. Here's what I've observed about the two. The
former looked like it ran and sounded good, but I've always liked the BLI
models running qualities much as well.

Price wise the MTH model is definitely the pricier of the two, though it's
up to you if it's worthwhile or not.

The MTH model has a die-cast boiler thus weighs significantly more then the
BLI J with its plastic boiler, though the latter is no light-weight and with
the traction tire it should pull a nice string of passenger or freight cars.
Mine pulled 30-hoppers without hesitation at my LHS even without the
traction tire. The MTH J also has a smoke unit and cab curtains. The coal
load looks a bit better done too IMO. I thought the distance between the
locomotive and tender looked to be a bit much but that's just my opinion.
