George:
With DCC, the control signal rides, in a sense, on top of the power being
sent through the rails to the engine. If the decoder has power, it has a
control signal. The only exception might be if something such as a
constant lighting diode or an old PFM sound circuit was still on the
engine. They might cause strange symptoms. It seems more likely that
putting the body on your frame somehow messed with your decoder wiring and
when you switched to the DX123D you also fixed whatever wiring issue you
were having.

I'm following the conversation but can't add to the instalation of DCC in
the engine. My add to the conversation is only that I use the Digitrax
DX123D decoder in all my engines. Yes I have found out the hard way about
bare wires and fried decoders. Any more I don't even start instalation
until I have all wires either cut back to no wire showing or when wiring I
have shrink wrap over the bare wires in the testing faze and then when all
is well I shrink. I was having problems with some of my brass engines not
picking up the radio signal when I put the body over the frame. The unit
would work with the body off but wouldn't pick up the radio signal when I
put the body on the frame. When I went to the DX123D decoder that issue
was behind me. I'm not into sound yet so I haven't tried any of those
decoders. It was hard enough for me to give up my block wiring and go to
DCC, one step at a time into the future.
Now just in case I would break out and get a sound decoder who is using
what. Never know this old trick could be taught a new dog , or something
like that.

frame. Is it needed? I hate the little plugs, even if they are Deans,
so I have been hard wiring the harnesses, isolating the drawbars, and
modifying the tenders to isolate the trucks from the tender frame so I can
use one truck for each rail for power. I cooked a Digitrax 163 decoder
in January, and haven't tried again on that engine. I've pathetically
just run the other M as DC. Still unpainted.

I haven't done any installations on them.
