George,

I would be interested in the letterhead. We are contemplating adding that
set to our N&W baggage car set we have in the works. We would not damage it
and it can be returned.

Sincerely,

Southern Express served the Greensboro, NC area. A member of the
Greensboro Chapter responded to me that the Chapter has some Southern Express
letterhead with their logo. If you know how or know someone who can create
decals some letterhead can be shared.

I seem to recall there was a drawing of this monogram among the archives
collection. It may have been considered a "sketch" rather than a stenciling
diagram. Maybe Charlie S. knows more about this.
The photo of the 117 on page 92 of Roseman's Railway Express: An Overview
is accompanied by this caption: "Norfolk & Western express car #117,
lettered for Southern Express Company, which also served the Southern Railway,
Atlantic Coast Line and Mobile & Ohio Railroad. Southern Express later
became Southeastern Expresss and in 1938 was merged into REA."
On page 7 of the book, information is given that when the federal
government took control of the railroads during WWI, several express companies
(Great Northern Express, Northern Express, Western Express, Adams Express,
American Express, Wells Fargo, and Southern Express) were merged in the
American Railway Express Co. Eventually, in 1929, 69 railroads organized the
Railway Express Agency which purchased the American Railway Express Co. on
March 1, 1929. Only the Southeastern Express Co., organized by Southern Ry. in
1921 remained independent until it was bought by REA in 1938.

Dave

That is a good question. Was this an artistic work? The only photo I have
seen of a heavy weight N&W Southern Express car was number 1301 in the VT
collection. 117 seems to be a low number for this type of car.

Photo attached.

I found the picture of N&W #117 (B-60 clone), lettered for 'Southern
Express Company', on page 92 of the book 'Railway Express' by V.S. Roseman. The
undated picture looks to be an illustration rather then a photograph,
through it may have been based on a photo. It is not suitable to create artwork
for a decal. There are quite a few pictures like this in the book, which
makes me wonder if this was an artistic choice to render photographic
material in this stylized form.

The caption says that "Southern Express Company... also served the
Southern Railway, Atlantic Coast Line, and Mobile & Ohio Railroad. Southern
Express later became Southeastern Express and in 1938 was merged into REA"

Stoney,
I am told that the picture comes from a book on "REA" authored by Vic
Roseman. Don't have the name of the book as Mr Roseman has written a few.
Maybe someone else on the list can add.

Happy New Year,

Tom

I don't think those decals have ever been produced in any scale. But
that might change this year.

I don't think I've seen a color photo, have you?

I haven't seen a photo of 117. Where did you find that one?

Hello,

I have a friend who is building and O Scale model of N&W Express car
117. It appears to be a 60 foot heavyweight baggage. He is looking for a
decal "Southern Express Company" that goes on the side in between the
doors. Does anyone know of a resource for getting a decal for the
"Southern Express Company" O scale would be preferred but if available
in HO, I'm sure we could photoshop it any reprint. (This is a private
one off not a commercial modeler)
Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Merry Christmas
Tom Lewis
