NS 28 is an ex N&W P1 coach, models of which have been offered by MTH, OMI, Sunset, and Key, but only as part of a Powhatan Arrow set, as N&W only had two of these cars, road numbers 501 & 502, both for service on the Arrow. At least one company has made car sides for the P1's that should be available separately.

NS 29 is an ex N&W P3 coach, which has also been offered by all of the previously mentioned companies. MTH, OMI, and Key all offered P3 coaches separately, in addition to the separate car sides. These cars were numbered 531-540 on N&W and were used on multiple trains.

MTH's description for their separate N&W coaches is a little confusing. They advertised two different cars, but in reality, all of the separate coaches they offered were P3's. A divided coach means a car that has partitions visually blocking one part of the car from the rest to comply with Jim Crow laws. The P3 coaches were not divided, but I believe the P2 coaches, which also appear in every Powhatan Arrow set, are divided.

The business car "Hollins College" is not the same as any of the aforementioned N&W passenger cars. It is an ex Wabash ACF 12-4 sleeper, formerly named "Western Sunset." N&W converted it into a dormitory car for their business train in 1973, and it received the number 10 after the NS merger. The Wabash car was virtually identical to a series of Union Pacific 12-4 sleeping cars, and models have been offered in brass from both Wasatch and Cascade. One obvious modification you would have to make on this car would be to blank out one of the windows, as N&W did this when they converted the car for business fleet service, I believe to make a larger bathroom. You should also note that N&W had a Budd built 10/6 sleeping car named "Hollins College" which was retired and sold years before "Western Sunset" was rebuilt and renamed as the second "Hollins College." The two cars have nothing to do with each other, and look nothing alike.

NS tuscan red is just as debatable as N&W tuscan red. It is a very rich color. Without mixing, my favorite paint to use right out of the bottle is Model Flex Milwaukee Maroon. The various offerings of Wisconsin Central Maroon and Lehigh Valley Cornell Red from different companies also look good.

Subject: Q on ex NW Pass Cars as NS Business Cars

All;

I am looking to build NS Business Cars #10 "Hollins College" and #'s 28 & #29. They all appear to match the OMI / MTH coaches that have been released. In regards to the MTH coach they offer two versions one is a regular version, the other is divided. Not being of the passenger car persuasion, what is meant by "divided", and would this be appropriate for any or all the aforementioned NS Business Cars? Also, does anyone have a good bead on what maroon paint would best match the current NS fleet?

Thanks,
Russ Goodwin
