Another option if you decide to go the manul route are the levers from Hump Yard. I have used some in the past and really like them since they can be mounted on a fascia or a number of places. They can be tedious to get set up, but are solid once you do. You can also run the piano wire diagonally through the layout top to get it under the layout if you wish.

For the most part, yes, although you can lift the track nails and only separate one end of the switch. I hope you did not solder the switches to the rest of the track. Sometimes you can just remove the track nails and, if you used flex track, you can move the track out of the way for the drill bit. Another thing, how thick is your sub roadbed? Mine is 3/4 inch plywood. When I used 3/4 to join and support the sub roadbed I had to drill a larger than 3/8 inch hole. as much as 3/4 inch, and go to much heavier switch control piano wire. Good Luck, running your trains on your own layout beats everything else in the world of trains.

And just when I was so proud of myself for finishing the trackwork I went to install my tortise switch machines.
Only the directions (and some youtube videos) say to "drill a 3/8" hole FROM THE TOP" to install. Please don't tell me that I have to rip up all those switches...is there a way to work around the inability to plan ahead?
