STATION COLORS

Jim Brewer wrote a station colors article in the Arrow back in 1998, I think. You can use our ‘search the arrow’ section on the website to get the exact issue with the article.

In the early years the colors were a cream color with rust brown trim. In the mid to late 1940’s the N&W experimented with a number of different color schemes on different stations (described in the Arrow Article) before deciding on the white with dark (emerald green) trim. Many of the older scheme stations (like Blue Ridge) and many of the experimental schemes lasted on the specific depots for many years after the white with dark green scheme became the standard. The white with dark green trim scheme lasted on older depots until the mass extinction of depots in the mid 1980’s although some were painted in overall gray (MoW color).

There is no way I claim to have any where near the knowledge of most, but from the little research I've done it seems the cream and light brown trim was the last. Not all stations converted and I'll yield to the more knowledge able. Ed. I went for off white and green trim. Hey, it's your railroad!

This may be a newbie type of question, but what era are these colors
correct for? I'm interested in about 1940-1948, and at least one
station I know of on my short line (the Danville & Western) was jointly
owned by the D&W and the N&W. It would be nice to know what color to
paint the depot.
