[NW Modeling List]

You pose an interesting question about reviewing anything. First the NWHS
does not have a cadre of reviewers for anything, whether it be books,
models, pictures, DVDs or other items. Every time we want something
reviewed, we have to find someone willing to do it. If an individual thinks
a product is bad at first glance, then it is not going to be an unbiased
review. As Harold notes, ". each of us must find his or her own threshold of
tolerance ." Some of us think a model is great because it is lettered
Norfolk & Western or Virginian, others think the same model is terrible
because a row of simulated rivets is out of place. 

 

What the NWHS does do is provide this mailing list so members can provide
their opinions (or individual reviews of products) or comment on others
opinions. Any member who wants to write a product review can submit it to
the modeling editor ( <mailto:meditor at nwhs.org> meditor at nwhs.org) for
inclusion in "The Arrow." Because of the variance in opinions based on the
"threshold of tolerance," it is difficult to say what is in the best
interest of members, but I can categorically state that nothing will happen
unless someone volunteers to do it.

blessings on the model and review the model in the "Arrow".  We refused,
telling the person who made the inquiry that there were too many incorrect
details on their model for the Society to accept."

Did Rivarossi/Hornby actually ask for "blessings"?

"One of the major points is that each of us must find his or her own
threshold of tolerance; that threshold will vary as an individual decides
what is "good enough" that he is satisfied, or at least not offended, by
what he sees in his basement."

Is it in the members best interests to refuse reviewing N&W/VGN models?
Would it not be better to give an unbiased review to 1.) inform the
membership what is available, 2.) Point out the pluses/minuses, and then,
let the member decide if the model is right for them?
