Freight whistle

Tom: in regard to your question concerning the whistle for a N&W M, the answer is yes and no. Many M's had the standard N&W freight whistle but a few that stayed in one area had individualized whistles. For example, the 382 had a unique whistle that can be heard on O. Winston Link's record "The Fading Giant".   You can't go wrong however, with the standard N&W hooter freight whistle. Harold Davenport

Would the whistle on an M be the same as on a Y?

I need to put a DCC sound decoder in the 3rd rail O scale M 4-8-0 and therefore need to choose.
