BALLAST

[NW Modeling List]

I prefer Woodland Scenics ballast, as there are several colors and sizes to customize whatever period one may be modeling. On my old layout, I used a base layer of cinders with a layer of the gray blend over it.  I now use Kato Unitrack, and are at present considering whether to use the ballast sold for use with the Unitrack or stick with my original Woodland Scenics formula.

Is there a commercial product to replicate NW 1950's  mainline and yard ballast?  What looks/works best to the more experienced hands?
