Ken: I will agree with you on gauge trim rings but not on all valve handles etc. I was under the impression that the throttle and reverse gear handles were just worn steel not chromed. Also the #26 brake system was added in 1982. #611 along with #612 and #613 had a square array of Ashton gauges that you noted. My first ride in the cab of #611 was in June 1959 from the station track at Norfolk out to the mainline switch and was in reverse. In the excitement I easily missed some of the cab fittings. <g> Harold

I beg to differ Harold. The chrome valve handles, throttle and reverse as well as gauge trim rings were standard for streamlined passenger locomotives beginning with Class J No. 600 in October 1941.
The varnished wood was done in 1982, and originally a green. In addition, the seatboxes were replaced with diesel seats, I think out of E-8s. The brake stand was changed to a 26 brake for ease of getting repair or replacement parts, in addition, a number of gauges were replaced with more modern gauges.
See the attached N&W photo from my book on the Class J, dated October 1941 of the 600's cab. When built, the 611's gauges were somewhat different.

Joseph: The chrome was applied in the restoration in 1982. Also the interior of the cab was light green when the "J" was in service. The natural finished wood was another addition during the 1982 restoration. Harold Davenport

Good afternoon,
I am detailing the cab of an MTH O Scale N&W J. I took a cab ride on the 611 in Spencer last May and was wondering if all the valves, stoker controls, brake stand, throttle, and reverse bar were chromed as delivered in 1950, or is the chrome new from the 2015 restoration? Any information and pictures will be of great help.
Very Respectfully,
Joseph Congemi
