Modeling Back number boards

I have often found that the black background that Microscale prints in the numberboard sets is not nearly as opaque as ShellScale's. You may want to try those as the let more light through, when I have used the on Kato locomotives.

I would like to light the black number boards for early diesels. Any suggestion on what to use behind the white number decals so that the light will illuminate the boards?
The shell scale boards are not suitable for lighting.
