Subject: EXTERNAL: Re: Passenger Car Roof Colors
Brown was standard until the late 1950's, when black became standard on all repaints. Thus, there were still brown roofs into the late '50's. However, the brown weathered rather quickly, making it hard to tell it was brown after the car had been out of the shop for awhile. What I do is mix black and brown to a dark color with a brownish cast. Once upon a time I used Floquil black and "roof brown" about one part to one part. Later, Floquil changed the shade of "roof brown," and I found I could use "Tuscan" in its place. Of course, there is no longer any Floquil, and I have not gotten around to looking at the color choices in Scalecoat. BTW: when black became standard for roofs, it was also applied to the ends and the trucks. Prior to that time trucks were actually olive green when outshopped. Like the roofs, they got dirty in time. I use Pullman green on my trucks.

Is there any rhyme or reason to N&W passenger roof paint colors? How would I decide whether to paint one brown (or whatever the non-black color was) vs black on any given model during the Tuscan side color era?
And what Scalecoat paint (or mix) best represents that brown (or whatever it was)?
Thank you!

That sounds like good advice, Todd. I'd very much like to see your photos.
It sounds like Herald King has me taken care of as far as the decals are concerned for now, but I really like this scheme and I may choose to do more later.
Safe travels, Todd!
