MTH Arrow Car

Walter,
I’m mainly interested in freight but just couldn’t pass on a “decent” 5-car Arrow set. My plans are to model the Clinch Valley line’s 3-car train with an E-2a and canteen (used in the last 2 months of operation from what I can gather). I have those cars, the canteen and the E-2 plus a few cars that were cheap to buy but were retired in the late 40s so, while not “prototypical”, they are suitable as fillers until I can replace them with more accurate cars. I’ve watched painted and unpainted brass Arrow sets come and go on eBay at ridiculous prices and, since passenger isn’t my focus, it was easy to pass on them. The MTH set, especially after you stated that the current run has more accurate color rendition, is too good to ignore. I have a BLI 612 that I plan to use in freight service (needs a doghouse) and, despite less-than-stellar factory sound, it’s much better quality than the 1978 Samhongsa J. Of course, motor and mechanism quality are MUCH improved since then but today’s models also have superior detail, IMO.
As for a K-1 or K-2/2a in plastic, not likely. Of course, no one 20 years ago thought we’d see Broadway’s A, Y6b, J, H-2a hoppers and auxiliary tender, let alone at least 3 runs of the engines and hopper, so ya never know. I won a painted Key K-1 on ebay last year that sold for a fair price. The painted K-2 I won wasn’t so “affordable” but the paint job is great and worth not having to mess with that aspect of it. Like all brass, it needs lights, sound and some mechanism tuning.

I agree with you on the investment opportunity, as long as there is interest in accurate models, even though they are plastic. In addition, most engines won't pull a brass set of equivalent cars. I have both sets of the Arrow cars and 3 of the MTH J's, and all of them out perform all the other manufacturers' products. If we could get a really good K, from anyone, I would be over the moon happy!!!

I took Phil’s lead and just bought the set from Trainworld. Considering that the round end obs is likely the most difficult car to purchase separately, I figured this set might make a decent “investment”. While I model 1957-62 WV coal fields where the Arrow didn’t run and, by the late 50s was supplemented with baggage and RPO, I think a 7-8 car train is too nice to ignore. I also have a 1978-run Samhongsa J (the last engine my Dad bought) awaiting paint, sound, lights, battery ops gear and a brass doghouse to pull it.
Thanks, Phil.

Trainworld.com in Brooklyn NY appears to have sets and individual NW cars still in stock. Looks like they’re out of NS cars.

I got mine last week and they are beautiful, far better (and a little less expensive) than any of the competitors products.

MTH has released the second run of their HO scale N&W Powhatan Arrow. The first run a few years ago featured a 5 car set with the car numbers ending in 1. This is the other set with the car numbers ending in 2, except for the diner. When MTH did their first run, they also offered diner 492 as a separate car. For this run, the diner in the set is 494/Fredrick J Kimball, and the 493/General William Mahone is offered separately, along with a pair of P3 coaches with different numbers. The other big change is the color of tuscan. I personally felt the color on the first run was a little faded/purple/dull, something. This new run features a richer color that is very close to the factory paint used by Key and Overland on their N&W passenger cars.
MTH has also released the N&W cars lettered for Norfolk Southern, based on excursion and business cars. The diners and #29 coach are accurate, while the others are stand-ins.
The first run of MTH Arrow cars went fast, so I imagine these will, too.
