Red Paint for AMB Caboose

I appreciate the dialog here. I have two wood caboose models to work on – both 20+ years old. It’s about time to build them. I’ve been concerned about the priming issue on these, so this will help a lot. One of the models is an N&W cab, to be done as the one in the Roanoke museum, the other I got for my dad long ago – a New York Central caboose. I recently found a photo from 1969, still in service near Niagara Falls, where I grew up. It’s now a museum piece. Guess I should do that one.

It shouldn't be necessary to prime the substructure; but I would still prime both sides of the finish detail layer; this is especially important if you are using an acrylic paint which would probably warp the piece if not painted/primed on both sides.

This model (and perhaps all AMB models) has a sub-structure car body of heavy bass (I think) wood. The finish/detail layer is peel and stick wood that is laminated to the sub structure. Jim and Bill, painting/priming both sides still necessary in this case?
As I noted in the build document I attached last week, I painted everything based on advice from my hobbyshop - including the sub-structure. Later, I came to the conclusion it wasn’t necessary due to the thickness of the structure - at least from a warping perspective. I do recall that the peel and stick siding was very thirsty, so priming what would become finished/painted surfaces makes sense.

I second Bill McClure's advice to prime the reverse side on wood structures and rolling stock; I usually prime both sides.

I have used acrylics on both wooden cars and structures, without issues, BUT I always prime the reverse side.
I have also used a 'sanding sealer' to hide some of the wood grain that seems to always show on cars. I use the Aero brand and thin it down.

Look for Model Master. "Red" will probably be close enough to the shade on N&W cabooses.

I haven?t used it yet but I found a bottle of model master acrylic caboose red on amazon for about $6. Since it?s acrylic I would imagine you?d have to be very careful not to warp the wood.

Actually,? the N&W color was closer to Floquil's signal red than to their caboose red.
As with anything,? color is an exercise in visual comparisons and any bright red will be good.? Avoid something that looks orangey or pink or maroon (or brown) and with any application of weathering you will be right where you want to be.
