Eric,
I hear your pain. That's a cheap punch to those who, by early reservations and or payment, supported the production of an engine/car. In fairness people who reserved and paid the price should get a refund in my book. Like in your case it's a good way to drive away customers who are willing to play the full game.
Over the years I have seen new "improved" releases to only find something new but an omission of something the previous runs had that was a strong modeling point.
I've also seen exquisite models produced with the wrong paint. How could any importer research enough to produce such a model and blow it on the paint job? Makes no sense to me. Personally I paint my own stuff so I prefer naked brass and most importers now won't bring in any.
For the time being we are lucky to have LMB's M and Sunset's M, M-1 and M-2. For those with very deep pockets PSC has made available several M-2's that are beautifully painted and detailed with working class lights and HL & BULs. Maybe someday a plastic manufacturer might do the 475 and some detail changed sisters for us. Keep your fingers crossed, write letters and emails and bend their ears when you see those guys at shows. Squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I’m highly reluctant to place a reservation for additional reasons.  I wanted a C&O M-1 model for years, having missed out on the OMI models.  When DP announced, I placed a reservation.  The model was promised to be “better than OMI’s”, and to have “cab interior detailing”, and to have “DCC and authentic sound files”.

I received the modelmany months later.  The finish was perfect, although the color placement was questioned.  The OMI model finish is pretty good too, from what I understand.  Where the OMI models had opening coal bunkers and front doors (to view the air pump details), the DP model did not.  Yes, the DP model cab included a brake stand, but you could look through the cab window and see the driveline turning through a slot in the floor.  I don’t accept that as “detailed cab interior”.  No electrical cabinets were modeled in the cab.  The sound is anemic, the lighting decent.  Overall, I was very disappointed in the model, and wish that I had waited until one of the OMI models became available.

To heap injury on injury, six weeks after BrassTrains delivered the models for which reservations were made, they discounted their “store inventory” of the M-1’s by 10% from what the reservers paid.  Boy, that stung.  And BT has done that again with the GPM PRR T-1 models, except that when BT holds a sale this fall, you willstill be able to buy a new GPM T-1 for 15% off, assuming that you’re willing to part with ~$2900 for one.

Yes, I really want a model of a UP coal turbine #80.  Will I place a reservation for the announced DP model?  Oh, Hell no.  Would I order a brass N&W M sight unseen, for delivery two years out, with the likelihood that I will be obligated to pay $2000 for it?  No longer in the cards.  If one happens to be produced, I will take a hard look at it and decide whether to go for one in the aftermarket, and what price I’m willing to pay for it, then.  After the C&O M-1, and a bad experience with a PSC Commodore Vanderbilt, I’m not willing to place much faith in the importers any more.

Problem is many don't respond to any announcements for proposed engines for several reasons. A big reason is most require a firm reservation and cash commitment. Many of us are a bit timid about that method of doing business. Ask those who have paid in advance for the B&O I-1 and I-5 cabooses that are SEVERAL YEARS late and no immediate release date. Not even any response from the company.

This happens and once in a while you lose everything. Most companies do eventually produce and deliver but who wants their money tied up for maybe years waiting?

Others hold off responding because they figure there will be plenty of people responding so why me too? That really hurts us too.

It would sure be nice to have more nice quality brass M's but something along the likes of a Spectrum M would be most welcome. Thankfully BLI likes big engines and Pennsy so I doubt if they will produce a problem M for us.

The only HO scale K-2 streamlined model I know of was the one by KEY. Sunset had announced one in O and HO but never came through with the HO model.

I saw a nice model done by a fellow using the Spectrum USRA 4-8-2 and some cobbled up Bachmann J shells. Obviously the boiler and all was oversized but he had fun, it looked decent and much cheaper then the KEY version.

The KEYs are common items on feebay and I've seen them run from $395 way up to $895 unpainted. I always hoped Bachmann would make a K-2 streamlined using their available (at the time) USRA mechanism.

I'd still rather see a Spectrum quality M or M-2!

There is a brass K2 out there in small numbers. The quantity of shells for which there would be a market in plastic is in the dozens, too few for the big manufacturer but just right for 3D printers who produce to the demand. Browser produced mountain drive kits and there are still many good IHC mountains out there.

This is just a question for th group what do y’all think the odds would be that we could get a plastic or die cast model of the N&W K2 K2A Streamlined locomotives in ho scale? Thanks for your thoughts and hope everyone is doing well.

One other factor to consider when the time comes to put together the decal sheet.  Do you include extra builders plates and class badges for known factory painted models that are lacking them, like the Broadway A's and J's?  Bare in mind I am not expecting an answer on this, just trying to generate discussion as Shellscale and the Society decide what needs to be included in the set, and how many of each.  But I do think there will be a market not just for people painting models for the first time, but also people who have either factory or custom painted models that they would want to go back and add these details to.  If I have to buy 6 sets to apply builders plates to 8 engines, I will, but if I could do the same number of engines and only buy 2 sets, that would be great.  It all depends on how many decals you have to arrange on the sheet, or sheets (A lot of Shellscale sets have used 2 sheets).

Also, one revision I like on the most recent Microscale sheet is they supplied black backgrounds for the builders plates, which makes a big difference if applying them to an engine with a smoke box that lacks the boiler jacketing.

While excursion era 611 decals have no interest for me I think Marty has the right idea. If going for the ultimate steam set then that should also be a part of it.

Not to open up a can of worms, because I know some people are sensitive about this, but any possibility of throwing in a couple of excursion era graphics for 611 on the decal sheet?  For example, decals for the Robert Claytor plaque and the "I am the thoroughbred of steam..." sticker?

I'd buy the set either way, but if we are going for the ultimate N&W steam decal set, why not include as much as possible?

Richard and I have already been discussing this and it will be correct. Believe me.

Besides builders and class plates, I am thinking headlight number boards, number plates, all sizes and designs of steam, cabside lettering, appropriate tender tank lettering, etc. etc.

I ordered Microscale's latest revision, and while it does finally put the builders plates and class badges in more of a bronze or brass color instead of dulux gold like the lettering, it still has a poor selection of classes repesented on the plates and badges. There are no A's, and no Y's other than Y6b. Their O scale revision includes these additional classes, so it is frustrating that the HO version still does not. I've looked around but can't find any currently in production other than Microscale. I know the Champ sets don't have the plates and badges I am looking for. Are there any options besides finding an appropriately sized "A" in another set and combining it with the Microscale?
