As long as they were in regular passenger service, the J's were kept clean. When they were pulling local freights - not so much. I remember seeing at least one photo of 611 where the chrome ring appeared dirty, but assume this was because it had not been in service for awhile.

Hi guys I was wondering if someone could answer two quick question fir me regarding the 611 in the 1950s. One did the N&W kept the chrome ring around the headlight clean and two what is the best sound decoder for the 611 in ho scale that has the right sounds fir het in the 1950s? I’m leaning hard towards TCS but I was wondering what some of you more Experienced and export modelers thought. Thank you and have a nice day.
Sincerely,
