Sergeant couplers

Jeff and all. I recorded some videos years ago with my Sergents. The last two videos in this playlist describe the parts, and show the assembly. Both help take the mystery out of the process.

It’s really pretty straight forward and inexpensive enough to make experimentation affordable. And that is really the best way to see if they will work for you from an aesthetic, assembly and operational aspect.

The cars you see in the first couple of videos remain the only ones I applied the couplers to. Those cars are a joy to operate and are, in many ways, easier to use than Kadees - especially uncoupling! The only time I had difficulty with them is if the couplers weren’t lined up. There are some third party solutions to center Sergents, but I haven’t worked with them. (List member Jim Kings Smoky Model Model Works, if I remember correctly).

For a variety of reasons, I chose not to do a large-scale installation, and I also haven’t un-converted my small fleet.

Side note1, I had no difficulties with curves of any sort. Side note2 - the shank thicknesses are drop in for most mass-market coupler boxes - but require thinning to work in Accurail boxes.

Jeff,

Sergent couplers are not sold already built. They are very easy to assemble. After painting it takes about one minute to assemble a coupler.
To get assembled couplers you might can pay someone to do this for you. I would ask on this group:

They support Sergent couplers and the owner will post sometime but has not been heard from in awhile. Frank Sergent is trying to wind down the business and all the designs were placed in the pubic domain last year. Sergent couplers are great I use them mainly between my locomotives to keep them coupled and since I have some locos that require F couplers I bought a bunch of them. They look great and function just like the real coupler.

Her are a few pics:

Hope this helps.
