I switched from HO to 3-rail O scale five years ago, and love it.
When I was modeling HO, I built a whole fleet of postwar-era N&W
hoppers (G1, H1, H2, H3, H4, H9, HL), based on Stewart, ECW, and
Westerfield models, as well as a few dozen prototype kits from
Sunshine and F&C. I can't tell you how many Tichy AB brake sets and
Detail Associates grab irons were involved.

With O scale, I still do all of my own detailing and painting, and use
decals from Protocraft or K4. And I run heavy trains.

I never actually built an HO layout, and the HO models now sit in
boxes wrapped in tissue paper.

If you are on some of the O scale FB groups, you have seen the outstanding quality of work being done today. I believe this will replace kits and kit- building in the future, especially in the larger scales. I'm like you, can't bring myself to paying $300 for a brass car-but if I really wanted it- I would.
> Glad to hear you are an O scale 2 railer. People have been saying the scale is dead. I disagree! I think its future is very bright! In the next 10 years there will be a TON of O scale on the market at bargain prices. At Chicago I have picked up Atlas cars for a song. Can't believe what some HO scale engines are going for nowadays. Okay, so they have all the bells, whistles, lights, etc., etc., but they will never have the MASS that O scale models so well display.

That said I do have a bunch of incorrect hopper cars painted N&W. What I would like is a return ( in O scale) to kits which are mostly correct for a particular car. Not museum quality because I also want to operate and switch them on a layout.

According to what I have seen recently the prices of such models range from the low $20, where some assembly is required and decoration may be less than perfect, to the latest releases from the major players like Walthers that are RTR and beautifully decorated with prices up to around $50.

Manufacturers such as Westerfield, F&C and the new 3D printers like Plate C produce this type of model which normally requires several hours of modeling time to complete. By the time you purchase appropriate trucks, couplers, paint, decals etc. for these kits, you are looking at $70 or more but when you finally look at that finished car in all its glory, the feeling of pride in accomplishment is second to none.

I am finishing up a Plate C, G-12 (video coming soon) that I will bring to the convention next year, however given the number of hours I have put in, I won’t be building another. So, if I were to decide I wanted several G-12s for my layout I would need to look elsewhere.
