Manage your interests. Don't let your interests manage you.

In the mid 2000's I sold off all my non-N&W models, N scale, my garden trains (USRA 2-8-8-2), and also my post-steam N&W. To narrow my focus. Since then, I have acquired every steam class I want, with only a couple exceptions. I recently made up my mind that I need a Jawn Henry to park in Boaz siding some days. Since I won't run it, an Alco will work. I really wish I had decided when they could be found for $1500 or less.
I was so tempted to buy one of those BLI Challengers for $300 a couple of months ago. I also want a PRR Decapod. And C&O 2-6-6-2's. And the recent Bull Moose offering caught my eye. See what I mean? It never ends. So, I consider myself fortunate to be narrowed to just one RR, at least for now.

Eclectic-a disease that causes model railroaders to spend tons of money on things they think they want and can use at some point in their lifetime-until they change scales and do it all over again.....

I have to admit, I'm way too eclectic. The projects that interest me are all over the place.
I have 500+ old hoppers from the 90's. I always intended to buy a house our build an outbuilding and have a huge railroad that spanned Bluefield to Williamson. Now that I am older and can afford that, I don't want to spend all that time building a huge layout. 😞 That said, I bought a bunch of BLI hoppers because they were new models, and they are accurate to N&W. I also bought a couple of the PRR-leased H2a's, because they say N&W on them.
I really like building unique parts of the N&W. coaling station, water tower, line poles (pole lines? I'm not exactly sure which is correct), rolling stock that no other railroads had. And I will spend hundreds of hours acquiring pictures, planning, 3d modeling, etc... and will spend thousands on brass, if it catches my eye.
Cabooses really interest me. I think these are a mixed bag, as the Balboa.Westside Model cars can be had for $100-150, so there isn't a pressing need for a $75 plastic or 3d model.
All that said, what matters to me more than anything else is era... '57-60.

It has occurred to me that one way of grouping modelers is bythe fidelity/price of model that they are interested in.
One group might bemore interested in building fleets of cars to fill the yards on their layoutsand may be willing to trade off some level of detail that may not be readily noticeablefrom arm’s length or further, for affordability. According to what I have seen recently theprices of such models range from the low $20, where some assembly is requiredand decoration may be less than perfect, to the latest releases from the majorplayers like Walthers that are RTR and beautifully decorated with prices up toaround $50.
Another group is looking for a modeling challenge and/or acontest-level model. Manufacturers suchas Westerfield, F&C and the new 3D printers like Plate C produce this typeof model which normally requires several hours of modeling time tocomplete. By the time you purchaseappropriate trucks, couplers, paint, decals etc. for these kits, you arelooking at $70 or more but when you finally look at that finished car in allits glory, the feeling of pride in accomplishment is second to none.
Many of us, I for one, fall into both groups. I am finishing up a Plate C, G-12 (videocoming soon) that I will bring to the convention next year, however given the numberof hours I have put in, I won’t be building another. So, if I were to decide I wanted severalG-12s for my layout I would need to look elsewhere.
I would like to hear from each and every one of you as towhether you consider yourself to be in the “layout” group, the “contest” groupor “both”. This should help give me somedirection for future projects for the society model committee.
Thank you in advance for your feedback/help,
Jim Cochran
