Dongles are easier to crack because you can intercept the communication
between the dongle and the software, and/or simply snapshot a copy of
the software as it is running (ie. already decrypted). Verifying a key
on a server you no longer have access to, however...

Now, it's possible to fake a response to the program such that it will
install. But if you need to verify a key to play online, well, that's
the bigger problem.
