100% FTE; Two-year fixed-term appointment (project end date of 8/31/14)
Reports to: Digital Archivist, for Special Collections & DLSS

As part of the Born-Digital Archives / Forensics Program and under the
supervision Digital Archivist, the Cabrinety Project Assistant is
responsible for re-processing the software portion of the Cabrinety
collection and managing, coordinating and assisting with movement
between the library storage facilities (physical and digital), on-campus
workspaces and NIST. They will perform metadata clean-up for outgoing
materials and register each software title using the Digital Object
Registry. The project assistant will perform quality assurance on
forensically captured software and digital images of manuals and
software boxes. The project assistant is required to work independently
and collaborate in the development / testing of new workflows, learning
new software tools and environments both within Special Collections/Born
Digital Program and within DLSS; analyze and recommend new structure for
delivering descriptive metadata online and working with the curator for
the history of Science and Technology on the selection of most important
titles for delivery in the Special Collections reading room possibly via
emulation. This may include researching and testing methods for setting
up and running games in emulation environments. This position may work
in our Page Mill Road or Redwood City location.


Specific responsibilities:
Responsible for workflow of collection material between SUL's storage
facility and Special Collections workspace with Access Services staff.

Responsible for ordering and stocking necessary supplies and packing
materials used for packing materials securely and coordinating shipments
to NIST with SUL Facilities Dept.

Responsible for cleaning up the descriptive metadata for all software
titles, including computer games or other software, the original
packaging, manuals, and all components.

Manages and oversees the workflow between DLSS, Special Collections and
NIST, including tracking the workflow of physical and digital material.

Verifies return receipt for all physical material from NIST and performs
quality assurance of digital objects and pre-assembly or bundling of
digital files and metadata in preparation for ingest into the Stanford
Digital Repository

Responsible for updating Special Collections Department's Locator Guide
once material has been returned to permanent storage.

Responsible for data entry in a variety of software, such as Archivists
Toolkit, FileMaker Pro, and registration of collection materials into
SUL's Digital Object Registry.

Will work with the Curator of History and Science collections to track
software copyright status and submit permissions letters to copyright
owners.

Responsible for working with the Digital Archivist to set up emulated
environments for a sub-set of Cabrinety software.

Responsible for publication of revised finding aids for collection at
the end of the project.

Attend project and team meetings.

Qualifications:
. Experience working in special collections or archival repositories for
1-2 years.
. Demonstrated knowledge of archival concepts and copyright laws.
. Experience working with historical computer media.
. Competence in personal computer applications including word processing
and database creation and management, such as Archivists Toolkit and
FileMaker Pro.
. Experience scripting data out of databases and data manipulation using
spreadsheets and XSLT.
. Demonstrated knowledge of open source virtualization software such as
VirtualBox.
. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
. Demonstrated experience in using judgment and initiative.
. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of
individuals and groups across all levels internal and external.
